Champions League: Manchester City, Juventus qualify for quarter-final

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola blasted his side's second-half complacency as English football's top-flight leaders reached the Champions League quarter-finals but surrendered their long-standing unbeaten home record to Basel last night.

Pep Guardiola was quick to play down City's tags as favourites for the competition, saying: "We're almost in the quarter-finals but we're not and we have to be calm".

They've managed to score at least three goals in 8 of their last 12 games in all competitions and some of those were against sides stronger than Basel. "We are new in that position, so we are so happy for that", said Guardiola.

Antonio Conte chose to set his team up with a defensive mentality but they were unable to keep a clean sheet as Bernardo Silva scored the only goal of the game at the start of the second half.

The visitors drew level nine minutes after Jesus' goal when Mohamed Elyounoussi buried the ball in the bottom corner with a well-struck effort from just inside the area.

"Passing the ball means passing to move the opponents and attack". That is the target.

The former Barcelona coach, however, had less positive words for the rest of his team, labelling their second-half performance as "really, really poor" and said their possession play had been largely pointless.

Making his first start for Manchester City since New Year's Eve 2017, when he lasted just 23 minutes before having to come off with an injury against Crystal Palace, Gabriel Jesus could not have asked for a better return.

City is in the Champions League quarterfinals for only the second time. Players like Kyle Walker, Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Agüero didn't need to play despite being on the bench, and Phil Foden got to play 90 minutes.

Trippier dropped out of the starting 11 for the next two matches but has since fought his way back into the side.

Guardiola will make a few alterations though, and with Fernandinho injured it may be an opportunity to give veteran Yaya Toure a run-out. "We are not where we want to be but we are happy with how it's going at the moment".

Will Basel find some consolation in leg two?

The crucial black mark on Pochettino's CV remains his failure to push Tottenham across the finish line when they have been on the brink of landing a trophy. The Paris Saint-Germain star has undergone surgery to repair a broken foot, casting doubt over his World Cup participation.
