Beyond appearance of progress, Grammys remain stagnant in representation — Closson

As a lifelong drummer, he decided to take a hiatus from playing music to report it. The website began as a fun project in 2013 to one of the top independent news sites.

The four other albums up for Album of the Year - Childish Gambino's "Awaken, My Love!", Jay-Z's 4:44, Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. and - were all masterful records, each of them poignant, elegant and visionary in their own way. And Bruno Mars was ultimately the first artist of color to win Album of the Year in nearly ten years, since 2008 when Herbie Hancock won.

The Grammy's have long been accused of being too white and too male but Grammy winner DeCurtis says things are changing. And then there was the aforementioned Kendrick Lamar, who was nominated in the same category in 2015. We have to get the gold, too. At least viewers got to see Fonsi and Yankee perform, without Justin Bieber in sight. He has a career total of 12 Grammys.

Kendrick started the Grammys off with a powerful opening performance. At one point, Lamar's background dancers, dressed in red, were shot down as he rapped lyrics, later coming back to life as fire burst to end the six-minute performance.

Jay-Z came in with the most nominations - eight of them - but left empty-handed - surprising many.

This imbalance created a considerable impact inside and outside the ceremony, very marked by the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement - both campaigns to collect funds for women who have been assaulted in different industries. Janelle Monae introduced the performance with strong words.

As I searched through the internet, I stumbled upon a tweet claiming the Grammys always goes with the "safest" pick when it comes to their awards. It's not just going on in Washington.

It seems all anyone is talking about the Monday following the 60-year anniversary of the Grammys is anything but the music. DAMN. was his most commercially successful album, as it received a double platinum in the United States and reached No. 1 on the Billboard's Top 200 Albums of the Year. Behind her stood a chorus of women in white, including familiar faces like Cyndi Lauper and Camila Cabello hugging Kesha afterwards for her raw, emotional performance. History shows that the Grammy Awards aren't necessarily about initial impact.

Though the night's only televised female Grammy acceptance speech came from best new artist winner Alessia Cara, Hollywood continued to acknowledge the Times Up movement.

Lamar was awarded best rap performance and best rap album, as well as best rap/sung performance for "Loyalty" featuring Rihanna. He also performed his hit track "Finesse" alongside Cardi B, who remixed the song late last year. The other albums nominated for that award were Usher's Confessions, Alicia Keys' The Diary of Alicia Keys, Green Day's American Idiot and Kanye West's The College Dropout. There's still a big disconnect between the music community, the voting members and the millions of people who watch the show.

He wasn't the only one with immigration on his mind.

The show, hosted by James Corden, also featured some comedy.

Over and out. Holla next week.

"Music often resonates more than spoken word ever could", he said. It earned a rousing applause from the crowd.

Bruno Mars won six prizes thanks to his album 24K Magic. I don't listen to music based on the gender of the person making it. Great musical art is great musical art. Period. Who knows? In a few years, New York might be the permanent home for the Jigga Awards.

Elton John and Miley Cyrus sing "Tiny Dancer" at the Grammys.

Mars won six Grammys in all, including Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, and Record of the Year for 24K Magic, and Best R&B Performance, Best R&B Song, and Song of the Year for That's What I Like.
