Trump extends Iran nuclear deal

U.S. officials and others have said Trump is expected to accept the recommendation of senior advisers that he keep the old nuclear-related sanctions suspended, while announcing new ones that would target other aspects of Iran's behavior such as mass arrests during anti-government protests this month.

In a telephone conversation with Trump on Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated "the determination of France to support the strict implementation of the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement and the importance of it being respected by all signatories", said the Elysee Palace.

Trump, however, issued different sanctions on Friday that targeted Iran for human rights abuses and ballistic missile development.

Zarif has said Trump's aggressive stance on the deal and Iran generally have also violated the commitment to "refrain from any policy specifically intended to directly and adversely affect the normalization of trade and economic relations with Iran" in the accord.

The US president says he wants to amend the deal - or withdraw from it completely.

Trump's decision, which wasn't set until late in the day Thursday, follows the advice of his entire national security team, including National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. She criticized the government in Tehran for pouring monies into those efforts while ignoring the needs of everyday Iranians.

"The president emphasized that the flaws in the nuclear deal must be corrected in 120 days", Ali Safavi, an official of the Washington office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

One official said Trump would be open to remaining in a modified deal if it was made permanent.

After repeatedly dubbing the 2015 pact the "the worst deal ever", Trump in October announced he was keeping the United States in the agreement.

On Friday, Trump is scheduled to decide whether or not to extend relief to Iran from some U.S. economic sanctions.

The President has argued that the deal makes the US look weak but is allegedly willing to waive the sanctions in order to toughen the terms of the agreement.

Senior administration officials alleged that over the past couple of weeks, Iran's malign activity has been in full display. Trump has complained that many of the Iranian restrictions expire next decade and has vacillated between talk of toughening the deal and pulling the U.S. out entirely.

But the Trump administration indicated on Friday that it was losing patience with Iran.

But the administration said these negotiations with Europe will not include Iran, which seems to run counter to U.N. and European insistence that any changes made in the deal include all parties.

"The United States will not stand by while the Iranian regime continues to engage in human rights abuses and injustice", Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement. This might test Tehran's willingness to abide by its side of the bargain.
