Tech Giants Issue Fixes, Updates For Meltdown And Spectre Flaws

The Meltdown exploit has been shown to work in a variety of ways, while Spectre uses some similar ideas but fundamentally works in a different fashion.

It's really unfortunately exploiting something which is there to try and make things better for us. There is much technical information with high level of details available for both Meltdown and Spectre, so I won't get into a lot of technical detail here.

The experts have advised users to keep their computers and smart devices up to date. "Apple will release an update for Safari on macOS and iOS in the coming days to mitigate these exploit techniques".

But what are the threats?

"Security researchers have recently uncovered security issues known by two names, Meltdown and Spectre". "This is not an incredibly bullish statement regardless of the security stuff". Because of the nature of the flaw, businesses and cloud computing companies are expected to be most affected. The problem affects nearly all operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, macOS and even Android, as well as virtualized environments such as VMware and Citrix.

That's not to say nothing can be done.

The videos demonstrate a script written with the exploits in mind, retrieving normally protected low level operating system kernel data.

Intel's chief executive officer sold shares in his company several months after Google informed the chipmaker of a serious security problem affecting its products.

Intel's Walker confirmed that security analysts informed the company in June of the security holes in its PC and phone microchips.

CPU owners are left with the unappealing choice of either purchasing a new processor or computer containing a CPU that does not contain the Defect, or continuing to use a computer with massive security vulnerabilities or one with significant performance degradation.
One cybersecurity-focused member of Congress took a fatalistic view of the disclosures. Bit by bit, he sold shares 21 times during 2017, but his largest sale by far was his last, when he dumped $50 million worth of stock: $28 million in just-vested options plus $22 million worth of Intel shares he had previously owned.

As any company would have done, Intel is also trying to curb the rising talks about Kzranich's emergency financial move. It takes a good deal of effort to access and discover the actual content of memory and make it meaningful, as mentioned earlier.

The lawsuits also allege that the patches to fix the vulnerabilities will cause computers to operate more slowly. Intel believes these exploits do not have the potential to corrupt, modify or delete data.

Effectively, all electronic devices manufactured all around the world in recent years contain potentially vulnerable chips.

Amazon said on Wednesday that it had already protected its customers from nearly all AWS instances from the vulnerabilities.

David Shipley, the CEO and co-founder of Beauceron Security Inc., says a patch, while necessary for each flaw, will create slowdown issues.

"The effects are still being benchmarked, however we're looking at a ballpark figure of five to 30 percent slow down, depending on the task and the processor model", The Register reported. This is what's called speculative execution: the central processing unit (CPU, also known as a chip or processor) predicts an action the user may want to execute (opening a program, closing an app) and starts it preemptively.
