Apple buys Shazam and says it has 'exciting plans in store'

Apple has confirmed that it will acquire Shazam, the popular app for iOS and Android that recognizes songs playing nearby in addition to providing other features.

In a statement to Fortune, an Apple spokesperson said that the tech giant is "thrilled that Shazam and its talented team will be joining Apple".

Sure, Apple Music is a natural fit for Shazam, but I'd argue that the acquisition is also about Siri.

Apple confirmed today in statements to several media outlets that it will buy Shazam, pending approval.

Shazam makes money largely through advertising and marketing for its partners, such as Apple, to which the company refers potential music listeners and buyers. Both companies have a history of working together as Shazam was one of the first titles in the App Store back in 2008. Snap, the visual messaging app, met with the company to discuss potentially buying it, according to Recode. That service has around 30 million users as of September of this year.

Apple just doesn't like being out of the headlines for long.

In other Apple news, the App Store is now accepting preorders for apps.

The great thing about Services revenue is that it builds on Apple's existing user base. Its algorithms could also help in song suggestions by using thematic elements (keys, melodies, tempos, and other qualities) in music you enjoy to recommend other songs you may like.

There is no word yet on what the acquisition means for Shazam's existing business. Shazam said Apple would enable it to "continue innovating".

Apple did not share further details about the agreement.

As of September 2016, Shazam announced that its app was downloaded more than 1 billion times.

Shazam has focused on offering its AR capabilities to brands.

Amazon is elbowing into the music industry behind its Echo device.

While Shazam is best known for its song-matching capabilities, the app has also been adding augmented reality features. Along with Cortana, Google and Alexa, it is a way to direct users towards products and information supplied by platforms that are simple, clever and most importantly, useful. The app is already used by Apple's assistant Siri, allowing users to ask: "What song is playing?"
