Welwyn Hatfield MP Grant Shapps calls for leadership contest

While Home Secretary Amber Rudd insisted the PM "should stay" despite the "presentation fails" in her problem-plagued conference speech.

Audrey Graham, a delegate from Bury, near Manchester, said she wanted a positive message from the prime minister in her closing address. She also reassured European citizens living in the United Kingdom that "you are welcome here" and urged negotiators to reach agreement on this policy "because we want you to stay".

Conservative British MP Grant Shapps on Friday called for a new leadership election within Theresa May's party, saying that the country is not "on the right path" under her leadership.

She began by apologising for sparking the costly June election which cost her party its majority in parliament, almost handing over power to Labor under Jeremy Corbyn.

She then struggled to contain a coughing fit for the remainder of her speech, repeatedly pausing to sip water and suck a throat drop.

British PM Theresa May's speech at the Conservative Party conference descended into chaos after a TV prankster interrupted her appearance to hand her a fake P45, British media report.

He told the Press Association: "She completely turned around that tone of the general election, of a monotone, iron lady, the Maybot".

The Conservatives already were in a sour mood after June's snap election - called three years early in hopes of bolstering the party's majority in Parliament - saw May's government reduced to a minority administration.

In one of the most freaky British political speeches in memory, May's address was ruined by coughing fits, a comedian handing her a bogus employment termination notice, and by letters falling off the slogans on the set behind her.

May seemed undisturbed by the interruption, which came just as she was turning to speak about the opposition Labour leader.

However, the Telegraph has said the plotters are planning an "alternative strategy", trying to gather support to approach May privately and persuade her to stand aside.

But the likes of Brexiteers Michael Fabricant and Nadine Dorries, who are seen as friendly to Johnson, have criticised the plot.

In his interview, Vaizey, who supported staying in the European Union at last year's referendum, said the Conservative Party is "split down the middle" on Brexit "and that's very bad for the country".

"Brodkin told her, "[British Foreign Secretary] Boris [Johnson] told me to give you this".

A Scottish minister, Humza Yousaf said that people feeling sorry for a politician is the worst possible position for a politician, let alone a Prime Minister.
