'SNL' gears up for new season launch with Gosling, Jay-Z

Sometimes Saturday Night Live is amusing, sometimes it's not.

Ryan Gosling hosted the season premiere of SNL this week alongside musical guest Jay-Z.

So, just to reiterate, YES, the season premiere of Saturday Night Live is tonight!

Alec Baldwin reprised his Emmy-winning portrayal of Donald Trump in the cold open, and we got to meet the new performers, Heidi Gardner, Luke Null and Chris Redd in a few sketches.

NBC promises a star-studded three week lineup starting on September 30.

Musical guest Jay-Z had his own political statement when he wore Colin Kaepernick's jersey number, a nod to the football player's decision to kneel during "The Star-Spangled Banner" last season. Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot is set to host next week.

On Oct. 14, Kumail Nanjiani will host the third episode of the series. It is just as insane as it sounds and yet I could not stop laughing about it.

During his first appearance on the show, Ryan's laughing fit became one of the best moments on the show and remains as amusing today as it was in 2015. I see my old pals, the grey aliens with the big, stupid, fat eyes, and I'm hit with the realization: "first time I've been on a second date since twenty-oh-nine". "Something they will never... ever forget".

This lovely promise isn't enough to convince NBC security to let him in without his visitor's pass.

While usually just a vehicle for Kate McKinnon to steal the entire show, this sketch wisely gave Gosling and Cecily Strong some material as well, particularly around the timey-wimey nature of his NSA hat.

Gosling was also featured in a sketch so weird we're not even sure we know what the hell we watched, but it's gotta be in our top five clips to watch this week.

While it was no hen holding a gun, it did leave Ryan struggling to keep a straight face by the end. "You want to go smoke a Virginia Slim until your hand stops moving?"

The return of Saturday Night Live was a much-needed injection of humor into an otherwise terrifying summer.
