President Trump's comments have given NFL players an opportunity — Eric Reid

"His comments on two issues have directly related to these issues but my protest is not about the president". You may think of those players-and one not playing, Colin Kaepernick-as heroes.

Personally, I don't like to get political. Aides have said Trump can focus on more than one issue at a time. We're far from perfect as a nation and the instant we stop seeking to improve is the moment we begin to fail.

The players say they are "taking a knee" to protest police brutality inordinately targeted toward African-Americans. For decades, those most privileged in American society taught and have been taught that the flag represents all of the things that make the United States great. The point is we miss opportunities to do the work of actually trying to change whatever sparked the debate. You might admire the man for saying whatever's on his mind.

After hours of careful consideration, and even a visit from Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former NFL player, we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, the next day during the anthem as a peaceful protest.

Kaepernick's actions left people angry. I would agree with Aquila that the football league would probably object to any interruption of the actual game for any type of political statement or protest. The national anthem is just the vehicle for the protest. "It's not until 50 years later that they are viewed differently". For one, just because it can change our behavior does not mean it will.

If these athletes want to express that belief, if that's what the anthem means to them, no other American has the right to define it for them.

The obvious problem there is that symbols are naturally subjective. Possibly turning them from rich black football players in the U.S. into poor unemployed black men with no marketable skills.

And you know why it's been hard?

Athletes didn't have enough support.

Newton is among those who believe Kaepernick has been unjustly treated. They saw his image get tarnished in the media. With luck, these protests and tweetstorms will fade away, and we can be back to normal. Once the final whistle blows, the illusion ends, and the athlete returns to a world in which his race constitutes 28 percent of arrests and 38 percent of state prisoners, all while being unemployed at twice the rate of white Americans.

You don't have to agree with him. The NFL must have rules of conduct; most employers do. But they also enshrine the founding principles and ideals of our country.

They have it all wrong.

You see? It isn't because of racism or white supremacy that Americans are not hopping on the kneeling bandwagon. It's all just so natural and... "In 1972, in 1947, at my birth in 1919, I know that I never had it made".
