Microsoft puts an end to Kinect

Originally created for the Xbox 360, the plucky add-on camera and microphone sold ~35 million units since its debut in 2010.

Speaking to creator Alex Kipman and Matthew Lapsen, GM of Xbox Devices Marketing about the decision, the outlet says once stores' current stock runs out, that's it for the machine.

Microsoft Kinect, the much-criticised motion-sensor peripheral for the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One, is officially no more.

As Co. Design noted, Microsoft has been moving away from the technology for a while now in favor of more traditional gaming experiences. The Kinect core sensor v4 - and soon to be, v5 - power Microsoft's augmented reality HoloLens. Its more useful function was, arguably, the voice commands.

Obviously, the writing has been on the wall for Kinect for a long time, and according to a report from Co.Design, the axe has finally dropped. Now, as the company prepares to launch the Xbox One X, 4K resolutions and hardware that tops its competitors are the new focus.

After seven years on the market in multiple iterations, Microsoft has confirmed in an interview that the Kinect will no longer be produced. Again, consumers weren't happy with this and Microsoft was eventually forced to sell Kinect separately from the Xbox One.

But Microsoft said it hasn't entirely given up on the Kinect. It was May of 2014 that the Xbox One was re-released sans Kinect.

For all intents and purposes, this was the death knell for Kinect and todays announcement just put the final nail in the coffin that was made three years ago. When Microsoft first developed the Kinect, they licensed technology from the 3D tracking company PrimeSense. Also, laptops with Windows Hello cameras are based on Kinect's tech to recognize people's faces.

Kinect Star Wars was one of the most highly-anticipated Kinect games when it was announced - after all, it promised to let you act out your fantasies of being a Jedi with your whole body, and that's cool.
