European Union calls for delay to Brexit trade talks

The position of the Europeans contrast with that of the first british minister Theresa May, who said of his side that " very good progress has been made ".

This morning the European Parliament voted 557-92 in favour of telling other EU leaders to block the UK's request to start discussing a post-Brexit deal.

"The negotiators made good progress on citizens' rights but the indispensable role of the European Court of Justice in guaranteeing those rights still needs to be agreed", he told MEPs.

He praised her "steadfast" leadership and declared the entire Cabinet was united around "every syllable" of the Brexit negotiating position set out by Mrs May in Florence last month.

The UK and Europe must agree on a Brexit transition deal by Christmas or risk banks triggering their contingency plans, the Bank of England has warned.

"When people ask if I'm a glass half-full or half-empty man, I just tell them that I'm Scottish and the glass isn't big enough", Mr. Fox said.

Another round of talks is scheduled for next week, ahead of the European Summit on October 19 and 20, in which European leaders will assess the progress of negotiations.

Liam Fox, the U.K.'s global trade secretary, denied that he ever implied that the current agreements would be closely replicated to ensure the British economy isn't affected by Brexit.

"Especially with regard to citizen's rights, we are very anxious", the parliament's Brexit coordinator Guy Verhofstadt said in a statement.

"I abstained on the final vote on this resolution because I doubt how worthwhile it is for this Parliament to express an opinion now about the ongoing Brexit negotiations".

The president of the parliament - which is largely unable to initiate or repeal European Union legislation and policy, only debate and propose amendments to it - had previously raised eyebrows by declaring that "sufficient progress" had not been made before the previous round of negotiations had even finished.

A new round of Brexit talks will begin next Monday in Brussels.

"The taxpayers of the EU27 should not pay for the British decision".

"Today, the European Union parliament took an important step forward towards reaching these objectives".

The EU leaders' motion insists that Britain must first move to settle three key separation issues: the financial settlement, the future rights of EU citizens, and the Irish border.

However, its chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, has indicated that "we are not yet there in terms of achieving sufficient progress" - "sufficient progress" being the benchmark for the talks to move onto other issues, including, critically, trade and the shape of any transitional arrangement.

Earlier Manfred Weber, head of the centre-right European People's Party (EPP), the largest political group in the European Parliament, said negotiations shouldn't be held hostage to British domestic politics.

A prankster who has previously targeted U.S President Donald Trump and former Federation Internationale de Football Association president Sepp Blatter interrupted British Prime Minister Theresa May's keynote speech at her annual conference on Wednesday.
