US Coast Guard makes dramatic rescue in waters off Puerto Rico

The devastation brought on by Hurricane Maria goes far beyond any damage to homes and infrastructure as Puerto Rico's power grid has apparently been entirely knocked out.

Broken canopies lay around Cortecito Beach after the crossing of Hurricane Maria over Bavaro, Dominican Republic in the Caribbean. Of the modest population of only 7,300, there were at least 15 fatalities reported, while a number of people have been reported missing. As Maria encounters cooler waters and wind shear, the storm is forecast to beginning weakening by Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Police used loudspeakers to warn people about a 6 p.m.to 6 a.m. curfew imposed by the governor.

A flash flood watch is also in effect for much of the island through Friday evening with continued rainfall.

Getting the island's ports back open to receive more emergency supplies is a top priority.

Jennifer Lopez recorded a heartfelt plea Thursday to get people to donate to hurricane relief efforts for Puerto Rico. Rivera, a catcher for the Cubs and native of Puerto Rico, has said he will match the money raised.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is also landing in San Juan today with help from his state.
