North Korea rejects UN sanctions resolution, warns US

A number of European Union countries including Britain are calling for the expulsion of North Korean workers posted in Europe, saying the revenue they generate is used to fund the nuclear programme.

Despite the vocal backing of the United States, which proposed the sanctions, they could be vetoed by Russian Federation and China which have expressed skepticism about the harsh measures.

"We now will implement new United Nations sanctions as we have always done before", Mogherini said.

"This will cut deep", U.S. ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley declared. "The North Korean regime has not yet passed the point of no return".

The UN Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously approved a fresh round of tougher sanctions against North Korea for its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

The U.S. had pushed for a complete oil embargo for the latest United Nations punitive measures.

"Any perception of weakness on the side of the Security Council would only encourage the regime to continue its provocations and objectively create the risk of an increasingly extreme situation", said France's Ambassador François Delattre.

That would mean halting massive joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises on North Korea's doorstep if the North halts its nuclear program.

Nikki Haley has rejected the proposal as "insulting".

"We think it's just another very small step - not a big deal", Mr Trump said as he met with Malaysia's prime minister at the White House.

The US put forward another draft resolution Monday that made considerable changes to a previous version of the proposal.

There was new political language in the resolution urging "further work to reduce tensions so as to advance the prospects for a comprehensive settlement".

The head of the International Atomic Energy said the test was a clear violation of many UN Security Council resolutions and in disregard of repeated demands of the international community.

Chinese Ambassador Liu Jieyi again called for talks "sooner rather than later".

The UN Security Council is due to vote on Monday afternoon, NY time, on a draft proposal of sanctions against the reclusive state.

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in a statement that the unanimous adoption of the sanctions showed the global community is "united against the illegal and reckless acts by the North Korean regime". The company said North Korea is a "pariah nation" that "operates in many ways like a criminal enterprise" and has been forced to find new ways to make money by various economic sanctions.

Washington told the UN Security Council on Friday to call a meeting on Monday to vote on a draft resolution establishing additional sanctions on North Korea for its missile and nuclear programme.

The sanctions under resolution 2375 target North Korea's textile industry, apply caps on the transfer of refined petroleum products and natural gas to the country, and blacklist three major DPRK government bodies.

North Korea detonated a huge H-bomb in an underground test facility in the north of the country last Sunday - and has vowed to launch an attack on the US Pacific island of Guam. Wording on the measures concerning North Korean workers overseas and the inspection of ships suspected of carrying prohibited cargo have also been amended.

The US needs the support of both of its geopolitical rivals for its current strategy of using economic pressure and diplomacy - and not military options - for getting North Korea to halt its testing of nuclear bombs and the missiles for delivering them. It wants the U.S. to talk to the Kim regime as a first move in building trust.

2 June 2017: United Nations imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on four entities and 14 officials, including the head of North Korea's overseas spying operations.

The head of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation this month warned that the world is at its most risky point in a generation.

Pyongyang held a banquet, concert and performances in a weekend display of pageantry to celebrate the September 3 nuclear test, which the North said was a hydrogen bomb that could be fitted onto a rocket.
