Irma's northern eyewall reaches lower Florida Keys

Editor's note: This is a developing story that is being constantly updated as the storm progresses.

After laying waste to several Caribbean islands, Hurricane Irma was barreling today towards Florida, where some 5.6 million people faced orders to evacuate as the monster storm made landfall in Cuba.

"US 1, the only road that comes in and out of the Florida Keys, there's three choke points - there are three places that are completely inaccessible".

"Currently, more than 3 million customers are without power across Florida, according to utility companies".

The core of the storm is expected to miss South Florida's populated southeast coast but residents will still experience life-threatening hurricane conditions. It's going to be tough for us to get in to perform search and rescue in South Florida.

The remnants of Irma moved into Alabama on Tuesday and were forecast to head into western Tennessee by Tuesday evening, with maximum sustained winds of 40km/h.

The Keys felt Irma's full fury when the storm blew ashore as a Category 4 hurricane Sunday morning with 130 miles per hour (209 kph) winds.

Many residents and tourists were left reeling after the storm ravaged some of the world's most exclusive tropical playgrounds, known for their turquoise waters and lush green vegetation.

Long said his biggest concern is when people fail to listen to early warnings from local government officials and then try to make a last-ditch effort to try to get to a shelter or another facility that will withstand severe winds. The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for the city, with nearby St Augustine also seeing flooding.

In Miami-Dade, the highest gust Sunday was 99 miles per hour, said Ed Rappaport, acting director of the National Hurricane Center.

- Strong winds blowing from the northeast have pushed water out of shallow parts of bays and harbors in cities like Tampa and Port Charlotte.

Irma, however, continued to be a threat as it crossed the northern part of the state and because of lingering storm surges along both coasts. No injuries have been reported.

Governor Rick Scott announced Monday, that he will be aggressively moving fuel back into Florida. The bad news is that it has inflicted a heck of a lot of damage on Florida, and it's not done yet.

A auto is seen in a flooded street in Miami, Florida. "We want the people of Miami Beach to return as soon as possible and as safe as possible".

"The crews on Miami Beach are doing everything they can to clear up these streets", Levine said in a video posted on Twitter.

"If you are planning to leave and do not leave tonight, you will have to ride out this extremely risky storm at your own risk", Scott said at a press conference. It was expected to cross into Georgia in the afternoon, leaving potentially unsafe storm surges in its wake.

Florida gas stations are still hurting for fuel Tuesday as the state continues to recover from Hurricane Irma. Schools in the state planned to close Monday.

Hurricane Irma continued to hit Florida's coastline Sunday night, where heavy rainfall and powerful winds reigned.
