Hurricane Irma's winds are already hitting Florida

Irma on Saturday is expected to make a northwest turn and head to the US state of Florida for a direct hit on Sunday. Authorities are still surveying damage from the record-breaking storm, and this story will be updated as more details emerge.

It killed at least 26 people before leaving the Caribbean for Florida.

Hurricane Irma made landfall earlier today in the Florida Keys (as a category 4) followed by a second landfall near Marco Island, Florida.

At the Miami-Dade Emergency Operations Center, the mayor told evacuated residents to stay evacuated.

Georgia reported more than 570,000 homes and businesses without electricity, and there were 80,000 in SC.

Helen Conklin carries sandbags as her husband, John Conklin, loads the vehicle at Lealman Community Park, 3890 55th Ave. Neighboring St. Petersburg announced a 5 p.m. curfew. As it continued on its path toward Georgia, the storm was expected to weaken. "We're gonna hold our butts and pray", said Helen.

Irma's maximum sustained winds remain at 280 km/h with higher gusts making it a potentially catastrophic tropical cyclone. Irma should then move inland over the Florida Panhandle and southwestern Georgia Monday afternoon.

Those rains are all but certain to produce some flooding in Broward and Palm Beach counties, said National Hurricane Center meteorologist Chris Fisher.

Though Irma is now a Category 3 storm, forecasters said it could restrengthen in the warm waters of the Florida Straits.

- As Irma barrels toward Florida, as many as 26 million people in the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba could be exposed to destructive winds and torrential rain, the Red Cross said, with 1.2 million people already battered by the storm.
