Some Floridians will likely wait weeks before power is restored, utilities officials have said.

Irma has weakened to a tropical storm as it moves over Florida toward southern Georgia. The death count in the Caribbean where the storm had struck days earlier was reported as high as 27.

Miami and South Florida woke up early Monday (Sept. 11) to swiftly pick up the pieces left behind by Hurricane Irma.

The National Hurricane Center has verified Klotzbach's tally of Irma's place in history, adding that some of the figures could change when the formal Tropical Cyclone Report is released later this year. Roadway signs and fences could be blown over, and some roads could become impassable due to debris from snapped tree trees and branches. That toll included 10 killed in Cuba and state media said most of those died in Havana, where seawater surged deep into residential neighbourhoods.

FEMA Chief Brock Long said he believed the Keys and Collier County in southwest Florida took the brunt of the storm.

Although Miami was spared the worst, large parts of the city are under water.

FPL says that 19,500 workers, including contractors and employees, are working to restore power to affected users.

Footage from the Grassy Key island shot by USA broadcaster NBC showed downed power lines, felled trees, and streets strewn with debris and vehicles.

But Irma again intensified over the warm waters approaching the Florida mainland, making it a Category 4, then shortly thereafter a 3 (still considered a major hurricane).

President Donald Trump has signed a disaster declaration that should speed federal funding to damaged areas in Florida. The Department of Transportation said U.S. Highway 1 was closed in the Keys pending a complete assessment of the bridges.

Some 6.3 million people in the state were told to evacuate before Irma arrived.

Because Miami International and Fort Lauderdale airports are both closed until Tuesday, any air travel for business is now restricted.

Which areas were hit before Florida?

In the dark: According to state officials, more than 50,000 customers are without power in Monroe County, Florida, which includes the Keys. Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda said 95 percent of Barbuda's buildings were destroyed or severely damaged.

The mass exodus from southern Florida could become one of the largest evacuations in USA history, according to CNN.

Anguilla: Extensive damage with one person confirmed dead. Rick Scott's office reported Monday that 5.8 million people were without electrical power.

The storm did some $20 billion to $40 billion in damage to insured property as it tore through Florida, catastrophe modeling firm AIR Worldwide estimated.

The NHC is monitoring another hurricane, Jose, which was spinning in the Atlantic about 1130km west of Florida.
