Footage shows apocalyptic consequences of Irma storm in Florida

Hurricane Irma damaged a gas station in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on September 10. Evacuation orders on the west came later than they had along Florida's East Coast. A total of 5.8 million Floridians are now without power, and local authorities are beginning to formally assess the damage across South Florida, thought to be heaviest in places including Naples, Marco Island, and the upper and middle Florida Keys.

Parts of Florida are still at risk for flash floods and heavy rain as Irma, which is additionally still producing almost hurricane force winds, moves toward the panhandle. Colleges including the University of Georgia and Georgia State also cancelled classes.

Acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke told CNN 200,000 people remained in shelters and more than 5 million were without power, but the top priority was search and rescue as daylight revealed the damage from the storm overnight.

Asked about officials' response to Irma's western turn, Gov. Rick Scott said he thought officials had worked quickly to open shelters and "a lot got opened in the last two days".

Five storm-related deaths have reported so far in the USA state, after Irma crossed ten Caribbean countries and territories, killing at least 28 people.

A television news crew wades into a flooded street in the Brickel section of Miami as Hurricane Irma passes by on Sunday. The state's biggest city, situated about 100 miles (160 km) east of Irma's core, was anything but unscathed.

The holiday islands of St Martin and St Barts, also hit on Wednesday, suffered the highest toll among Caribbean victims of Irma.

Jonathan Brubaker, 51, waited out the storm bunkered in a recently constructed house in Bradenton, on the state's west coast, with hurricane shutters drawn, flashlights and candles ready.

By 8 a.m. Monday, Irma was about 105 miles north of Tampa, with sustained winds of 70 miles an hour.

Flood warnings covered much of eastern Georgia and extreme northeast Florida Monday morning.

Irma is expected to cause billions of dollars in damage to the third-most-populous USA state, a major tourism hub with an economy that generates about 5 percent of US gross domestic product. The powerful storm continues to blaze its disastrous path through Florida, where more than six million people had been ordered to flee in one of the biggest evacuations in United States history.

Videos on social media show a battered up South Beach as floodwaters rampaged through the streets, entered businesses and residencies. Mother and infant were later taken to a hospital, it said. Monday offered a mixed forecast for Miami-Dade County - gusts of winds of up to 50 miles per hour in the early morning hours, with a sunny upper 80s temperature day predicted and the possibility of showers and thunderstorms.

"We're asking folks to be patient and remain sheltered in place", said St. Augustine Fire Chief Carlos Aviles. She feared for her canal-facing home. "It was was like, 'Oh my God, what is going to happen?'" Forecasters said significant river flooding was likely over the next five days in Florida and southern Georgia. Nearly three months remain in the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through November.
