Evacuation of Georgia coast to start Saturday

Gov. Henry McMaster said at a news conference Thursday that he expects to issue an evacuation order effective 10 a.m. Saturday.

According to the executive order, the state of emergency will be in act until September 17, at 11:59 p.m.

USA nuclear plants' safety systems are created to withstand significant hazard events, including hurricane force winds and flooding.

"Statewide we're going to have more (insurance) claims than we did with Matthew", said Jay Florence, Georgia's deputy insurance commissioner.

Hurricane Irma is expected to bring heavy rains and winds to Georgia and Georgia Power has released tips to help keep you and your family safe.

Some 65 people evacuated to Richland County's only shelter at Dent Middle School. "That may change at 6 o'clock this evening". McMaster rescinded an emergency evacuation order for inpatient health care facilities in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties Friday. Counties on the barrier islands impacted were Colleton, Jasper and Beaufort.

Officials said 162 roads in 22 counties - majority secondary routes - still were closed Tuesday morning because of fallen trees and flooding.

"We are staging critical relief supplies in key locations in preparation and will deploy close to the worst affected areas in the coming days", said Major Douglas McClure, The Salvation Army Georgia Incident Management Team Director.

In the coming days, Florida and the coasts of Georgia and SC can expect to see motorists flocking to gas stations to fill up their gas tanks.

Traffic continues to flow well on the state's roads, only spot shortages in gas have been reported and those are being addressed, the state's farmers are prepared and no problems have been reported in evacuations.

McMaster said state and local law enforcement, as well as armed National Guardsmen would be patrolling evacuated areas to protect them. A receptionist for NHC HealthCare in Charleston said they had been waiting on the governor's order and that "everything would be moved out by Sunday". Spalding scrambled to get furniture off the floor as 2 feet (0.6 meters) of water rose quickly inside the house.

Attorney General says there have been 250 complaints of price gouging, mainly gas, water, etc. Says this is less than previous natural disasters, and that complaints will be looked into after the event is over. The governor asks that South Carolinians try not to top off their vehicles everyday. "They have been tested repeatedly over the past year and our colleagues are ready to respond as called", Public Safety Secretary Erik Hooks said. "I am concerned about spot shortages due to a panic".

He drove to St. Helena Island in coastal SC with a truckload of supplies to get his cabin, boat and sailboat storm-ready - but wasn't sticking around after seeing footage of Irma's Caribbean devastation.
