Clean sheet is great news for Brighton and Hove Albion

Tomer Hemed's smart finish five minutes after half time was enough to seperate the sides in an entertaining match.

Newcastle continued to press for an equaliser, but in the end, Brighton hung on to claim their second win of the league season and move three points clear of the relegation zone. But if we can delay that as much as we can, it will be fine.

Did Tomer Hemed mean to stamp on DeAndre Yedlin?

It was nearly a carbon copy minutes after that, only this time it was Mbemba who slid a ball across to Perez. The Spaniard was inches away from connecting with the ball. Knockaert did well to dribble away from Mikel Merino and set up the cross for Solly March, his ball into Groß's path wasn't met by the flawless volley, instead, it deflected off Knockaert and out for a goal kick. This time Perez did meet the cross, but his shot sailed over the bar. His shot however did not possess the desired accuracy though and was comfortably caught by the Australian.

The teams went into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

The goal came courtesy of a well-worked set-piece, with Gross fizzing a free-kick to the back post to enable Stephens to head the ball back across the area. Israeli striker Tomer Hemed reacted the quickest to spear home with an acrobatic effort.

Brighton nearly extended their lead through Solly March but goalkeeper Rob Elliot saved sharply with his feet.

Yet Newcastle full-back Yedlin, who clashed with Hemed earlier in the match, admitted: "I felt something on my calf".

It was almost the former Liverpool midfielder that drew the visitors level. Their last three games have involved a one-goal winning margin, and in matches like that, you have to put your chances away. In this loss, Brighton made a decision to send mostly the second unit player onto the pitch, probably resting the best players for the upcoming match against Newcastle. Failed to create a chance, won very few tackles and should be replaced in the side going forward by Jonjo Shelvey - who at least tried to change things when he came on.

However, once the home side did eventually hit the front, Rafa Benitez's men were not able to recover despite applying considerable pressure.

For that reason, if no other, Brighton, Huddersfield and even last season's second-tier champions Newcastle featured strongly among the teams tipped for an immediate return after coming up to the Premier League last May.
