Canada investigates the hacking of USA credit rating agency Equifax

The provider does, however, believe that "due to the nature of the information... identity takeover is unlikely for the United Kingdom consumers who had their data potentially accessed in this incident".

Depending on where a consumer lives, those fees now range from $5 to $10 per request per agency.

Equifax announced that personal and financial information could have been breached for 143 million Americans.

- Reimburse consumers for all costs they incur to freeze their credit because of the breach - including costs they incur at other credit reporting agencies. The Department of Financial Services said consumers potentially affected by any type of cybersecurity breach should consider placing a "fraud alert" or "credit freeze" on their credit files.

"They have a huge responsibility, and they clearly failed in this regard", Coggin said.

Equifax was hacked nearly five months before the Atlanta-based company publicly disclosed the breach that may have compromised the personal data, including social security numbers and credit card information, of 143 million Americans, according to Bloomberg. For more information on how to place a credit freeze, you may download our brochure, entitled Protect Yourself from Identity Theft, available at ag.state.mn.us/Office/Publications.asp. The company previously revealed a data breach affecting tens of millions, including more than 1.2 million Mississippians. Also, run a free credit check with Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

"Equifax waited six weeks to disclose this breach to Americans and they've done everything wrong since", Shapiro said.

"The people of SC are angry about this breach and the potential for identity theft", Attorney General Wilson said.

The attorneys general also expressed concern about the confusion caused by the company's response to date to the data breach. I'll keep you updated on my efforts to hold Equifax accountable for failing to safeguard our personal information.

It plans to contact up to 400,000 people to offer them a free identity protection service monitoring their personal information.
