Call for UN Help to Stop Myanmar Violence

The medical and non-medical employees at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) have demanded that the government allow them to send medical teams to Myanmar so that they can treat the Rohingya Muslims fleeing state persecution in the Rakhine state.

Mahatma Ghandi's granddaughter has written to State Counsellor of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi, urging her to use her position to stop attacks targeting Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state, lSouth African daily The Times reported Monday.

The Burmese Army has said that it is rooting out "terrorists" among the Rohingya, including fighters from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa), an insurgent group that has carried out dozens of attacks on security sites on August 25. They held aloft banners which called on global bodies to save the Rohingya Muslims from horrific violence.

The United Nations now estimates that well over a quarter of a million refugees have crossed over into Bangladesh.

Many of Myanmar's Buddhists, who have long feared that their faith is in jeopardy, consider Muslims to be "terrorists" or a social threat.

Almost a quarter of Myanmar's 1.1 million Rohingya have fled the country since October, when the military launched a crackdown in response to attacks on three border outposts in Rakhine.

In a phone briefing with reporters Friday, Murphy said the U.S.is focused on expanding humanitarian and media access in the region, and condemns a "variety" of attacks - "attacks on security forces, attacks on civilians (and) attacks by civilians".

"They are deprived of everything". The conditions are squalid, and the crush of new arrivals has stretched aid agencies thin.

The humanitarian crisis next door has left Bangladesh scrambling to deal with people that it does not welcome either.

Rohingya Muslims are a hated minority group in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. Myanmar's government calls them Bengalis and considers them illegal migrants, even though many families have been in the country for generations.

The UN said there was a sharp increase in arrivals on Wednesday, when at least 300 boats from Myanmar landed in Bangladesh.

In recent days, Bangladesh officials have said they plan to go ahead with a controversial plan to develop an isolated, flood-prone island in the Bay of Bengal to temporarily house tens of thousands of refugees, drawing fresh criticism from the worldwide community.

The spokesperson for the UNHCR, Duniya Aslam Khan, issued a call for "urgent action" amid "a dramatic increase in the number of refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar's Northern Rakhine state" during a United Nations briefing.

It says about 30,000 non-Muslims have been displaced. "I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same".

The crisis has also strained regional ties. Those fleeing say Myanmar's military are burning their villages and attacking them.

Bangladesh has proposed "safe zones" run by aid groups for Rohingya in Myanmar.

New arrivals, which mostly included women, children and the elderly, struggled to find shelter as many established makeshift settlements with some services available were already filled.

"All the newly arrived Rohingya will be brought in this makeshift camp and housed", Cox's Bazar magistrate Khaled Mahmud told AFP.

In his call with reporters, Murphy called those discussions "productive" and "ongoing", and said the USA is finding "very willing partners within the government".
