US president Donald Trump declares opioid epidemic a national emergency

"We must act boldly to stop it".

The opioid commission's recommendations contrast sharply from the Trump administration's overall response to the opioid crisis to date.

Trump's decision follows the recommendation of his opioid task force led by Gov. Chris Christie.

It cited 142 Americans dying every day from overdoses and added this plea to President Trump, saying, "you, Mr. President, are the only person who can bring this type of intensity to the emergency, and we believe you have the will to do so and will do so immediately".

Price pointed out that the Trump administration can still curb the increase of deaths due to drug overdose by not declaring the crisis as a public health emergency. It's a national emergency.

On Tuesday, Trump received a private briefing on the crisis with administration officials and advisers.

Trump also has called for tougher law enforcement, including locking up more drug dealers after what he said was a decline in drug-related prosecutions since 2011, and more aggressive policing at U.S. borders to stop the import of heroin and synthetic opioids. "There's never been anything like what's happened to this country over the last four or five years", the president said. Trump can't just wipe these problems away, but he can direct his agencies to remove the barriers under their control and work with other federal agencies and state governments to eliminate other counterproductive hurdles. This is happening worldwide.

President Barack Obama declared a national emergency as Sandy headed for the East Coast that year.

OH leads the nation in opioid deaths. "His announcement is another step in the effort to battle this most hard crisis".

Ohio Democrats joined Republicans in praising Trump's announcement. The same study found that as many as 25% of people who receive prescription opioids for long term non-cancer care deals with addiction.

"It's symbolic mostly and it actually involves a lot of reporting and paperwork", Richard Frank, a professor of health economics at Harvard Medical School, said earlier this week when asked about the importance of a presidential declaration. This means more funding and resources to help fight this crisis.

Substance abuse counselors say it's the news they've hoped for. Fentanyl is an opioid 50 to 100 times more powerful than morphine that is often mixed into other drugs such as heroin.

American opioid addicts have told ITV news how they slid into drugs abouse - with many initially getting hooked on legally-prescribed painkillers. "In this case, this is a problem that has been festering for some time - and now we're finally paying attention to it". It requires meaningful action and investment.

Trump has previously suggested he'd combat the opioid crisis by empowering law enforcement and cracking down on drug use. But a number of states say similar declarations have helped.

The commission that recommended the emergency declaration also plans to explore issues of youth opioid use, its preliminary report said.

He also said, "We're very, very tough on the Southern border, where much of this comes in". More federal help is welcome.
