South African rights group denounces immunity plans for Grace Mugabe

The first lady claimed immunity after allegedly whipping Gabriella Engels with an electrical extension cord at a Johannesburg hotel where Mugabe's two sons, both in their 20s, were staying. She has asked for diplomatic immunity in the case and has not yet been charged.

"We have also heard that the butcher of Matabeleland, Mr Mnangagwa hismeslf is in South Africa seeking medical help after being poisoned in a recent ZANU PF rally in Gwanda, we thank God for that and we hope he won't pull through" Mr Mhluzi said.

Other countries in southern Africa that supported the ANC in the struggle against apartheid would also see prosecuting Grace Mugabe as a betrayal, the source said.

Zimbabwe's first lady Grace Mugabe has returned home from South Africa after failing to turn herself in to police in Johannesburg to face accusations of assaulting a model in a hotel room.

Mugabe had been due to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon under a deal struck with authorities but failed to turn up, police said.

Sources close to the sale yesterday confirmed that the wife of the 93-year-old Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe bought the majestic property in February through a shelf company.

"The family was approached via third parties, offering them money to settle the matter", said Nel. Pictures of Gabriela's head injury were released - she needed a maximum of 14 stitches to cover the wound.

Gabriella Engels, 20, and her mother Debbie were reportedly given a blank cheque by Zimbabwean officials to come up with an amount that will make them not seek legal redress.

In 2009, Grace was investigated by Hong Kong police for an alleged assault on a British photographer during a shopping trip to the city.

"Should an erroneous decision be made to grant diplomatic immunity in this case then we would consider bringing an urgent application to the high court to prevent the decision from being executed", said Willie Spies, another lawyer with AfriForum.

Harare has made no official comment and requests for comment from Zimbabwean government officials have gone unanswered.

Grace Mugabe must today hand over all of her passports to the South African government as a show of good faith to ensure that she does not flee the country.

"The word settlement and criminal prosecution don't go hand in hand.as far as criminal procedure is concerned, you search for justice", Nel said.
