Seven-year-old missing in Barcelona after terror attack, says grandfather

A van ploughed into crowds in the heart of Barcelona on Thursday, killing 13 people and injuring more than 100 others, 15 of them seriously, in what police said was a terror attack.

Hours after the van rampage, police shot dead five people in the Catalan resort of Cambrils, 120 km down the coast from Barcelona, after they drove their auto at pedestrians and police officers. They also said they had arrested four suspects - three Moroccans and a Spaniard.

Police shot dead the five attackers, who they said were armed with knives, axes and fake explosive belts.

Later, in Cambrils, the suspects drove a auto into pedestrians, killing one woman and injuring at least six other people.

Authorities believe the two attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils are directly linked to Wednesday night's explosion in Alcanar where police discovered at least 20 gas containers.

According to CNN, at least one person was killed and seven others were hospitalized.

According to Spanish newspaper El Pais, police in Catalonia said they were searching for the man, who is understood to be a key member of a jihadist cell of 12 people.

Another three people have been identified but are still at large.

There were some three dozen nationalities among the dead and injured who came from countries as varied as France, Pakistan, Spain, the Netherlands, China, Venezuela, Mauritania, Australia, Britain and the United States.

Suspected jihadists have been behind similar previous attacks.

In a counterterrorism operation following the Cambris incident, four attack suspects were killed and one died from his wounds later.

Just before 6 p.m. on Thursday, the van jumped the curb and left a trail of bloodied, bruised bodies as it continued on its path for more than a thousand feet.

In a poignant moment yesterday, a crowd led by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, King Felipe VI and the president of Catalonia, where Barcelona and Cambrils are located, observed a minute of silence in a square in Barcelona that was followed by applause and shouts of "not afraid".

Officials say the Barcelona van was rented in the name of 28-year-old Moroccan-born Driss Oukabir, who was taken into custody within hours of the attack.

In the past 13 months, militants have used vehicles as weapons to kill almost 130 people in France, Germany, Britain, Sweden and Spain.
