Postal vote on gay marriage triggers furore

The conservative Liberal-National coalition past year went to the polls promising to hold a nationwide plebiscite, but the opposition Labor Party, Greens and crossbench senators yesterday rejected the option in the Upper House Senate for the second time.

Former High Court judge Michael Kirby has also spoken of wanting the plan abandoned, saying he is instead happy to wait to Wednesday his partner of 50 years.

Justice Kirby labelled the plan a "Mickey Mouse" endeavour.

"It's a huge issue getting back on the electoral roll and I'm not going to be able to do that in time for this".

Wong said an open debate on same sex marriage was "exposing" the children of LGBTQI couples to "that kind of hatred". That's a 230 percent increase compared to last week, indicating the discussion around the postal vote is having a serious impact.

Cabinet ministers will avoid actively campaigning on same-sex marriage outside their electorates in the months leading up to a postal plebscite.

Others though, including same-sex marriage supporters, have argued strongly against abstaining from the ballot. "That makes it particularly hard to our side because we don't have Qantas and Alan Joyce and corporate Australia behind us", he said.

"There's no reliable mail, it takes a really long time for stuff to get out to us".

The Minister said the ABS would make arrangements for the secondment of officers from the AEC to assist the Australian Statistician with the process as required. Forster said her brother was just "plain wrong" in his negative stance on same-sex marriage.

"I will be the first to condemn hateful, vindictive, offensive words that are said in this debate", she said.

"That's what it's supposed to be used for, not something like 'can two people who love each other marry each other?'".

After the song has ended, Minchin implores Australians to counter the "horrid" plebiscite and "drown the mofos in "yes" votes".

Labor leader Bill Shorten has implored same-sex marriage advocates to drop their resistance to a postal ballot and vote Yes, warning that legal challenges and threats of a boycott were exactly what the opponents of change wanted.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics, which will conduct the voluntary survey, says it is finalising the details, including how overseas voters will participate.

This means the normal procedures and protections of election laws will not necessarily apply, according to Prof George Williams, a law expert at the University of New South Wales. The Northern Territory and Australia need to move forward.
