Liverpool vs Crystal Palace match preview

Sadio Mane once again proved how crucial he is to the level of success.

Palace, beaten 3-0 at home to Huddersfield in their opening match, should have scored when the game was goalless. And, while they won 2-1 in Hoffenheim in the Champions League in midweek, Liverpool could easily have drawn or lost the match.

The result moves Liverpool up to fourth in the fledgling Premier League table, following their 3-3 draw with Watford last time out.

Jurgen Klopp made several changes to the side that beat Hoffenheim 2-1 in mid-week, with Joe Gomez, Ragnar Klavan and Andrew Robertson coming into the defence, and James Milner and Daniel Sturridge further up the pitch. The towering center forward is exactly the sort of player the home side struggle defending against and that shows in his scoring record in the last 3 games at Anfield as an opposition player.

Mane's goal punctured the frustration which was building inside Anfield.

Containing former Reds hit-man Christian Benteke was a priority for Liverpool, and Robertson believes that the changes made by Klopp enabled them to do exactly that.

Crystal Palace: Hennessey; Fosu-Mensah, Dann, Riedewald; Ward, Milivojevic, Puncheon, van Aanholt; Loftus Cheek, Benteke, Townsend. It was a huge let-off for Liverpool.

Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer is hoping for plenty of transfer activity in the final fortnight of the window after his side's poor start to the season leaves them without a point or a goal in two games.

Using youngster Dominic Solanke as a substitute added more height to the team, whilst Dejan Lovren's late arrival meant that Liverpool finished the game with seven of their eleven players being six foot or over. I have no idea how much we had the ball but it was a lot.

"We had moments in the first half but had to be more patient because they were deep".

Klopp on @andrewrobertso5: "I think everybody could see how good Robbo can be". Hal Robson-Kanu scored and was sent off as West Brom secured a 1 - 0 away win against Burnley at Turf Moor. We could have closed the game earlier, we didn't. It's the kind of football that to me feels like we are real contenders for the #Premier League cup this year, if we can only maintain the momentum, wins and goal difference.

The pundits did touch on the Eagles' display though, with former Reds man Danny Murphy praising the Eagles.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has questioned whether some Premier League clubs are conforming to Financial Fair Play.

The Reds kept a clean sheet against Crystal Palace for the first time in 14 competitive matches.
