Lawmakers plan to meet after school-funding veto

Gov. Rauner and the Illinois Policy Institute have done so repeatedly with SB1, even though Politifact has rated the claim "false" and the almost always pro-Rauner Chicago Tribune editorial board has stated it is not a bailout.

Local democratic lawmakers and school superintendents are pushing Illinois legislators to override Governor Rauner's (R-IL) veto of Senate Bill One.

It's a familiar scenario in Springfield. "I remain optimistic that there is a path to a reasonable compromise on a fair school funding system that improves public education across all of Illinois". Rauner used an amendatory veto to remove parts he says are too generous to Chicago schools.

Madigan will call a bill with Governor Rauner's exact SB1 amendatory veto language.

Although a representative of the Champaign school district was at Thursday's news conference at Urbana High School, no one from Champaign offered any remarks. "That's not our problem, they made that on their own", Davidsmeyer says.

"When you break it down, there are five or six ways that Chicago scams their way into a lot more money", Batinick said.

That's nonsense. Taxpayers provide $15,378 per Chicago student compared to a statewide average of $12,821. It would encourage individuals and corporations to donate money toward a state-supported fund to help low- and middle-income families move their children to a participating private or public school.

The Chicago parents seek an injunction barring the state from adopting a non-evidentiary based school funding model.

In the 18 years I've covered the Illinois Legislature, I've seen this happen time and time again.

"The state of Illinois must address the inequity in school funding and uphold minimum funding requirements". He says the system has been due for a repair. They want to take credit for the spending - but not for the taxes.

He says the schools were supposed to receive state aid payments on August 10th but they didn't come through. No school districts would lose money under the new formula.

- Money should follow students, so school districts that are attracting students should get more money and those who aren't less.

The "Drive for Life Act" allows anyone 16 or older to join the organ and tissue donor registry when he or she gets a driver's license or state ID.

State aid payments can't be sent to schools until a new evidence-based funding formula becomes law.

State Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, said Friday he doesn't anticipate a quick vote in the House. My colleagues and the families and students they represent have about 13 days and then what do they do?
