India, China agree expeditious disengagement of border personnel in Doklam

India had backed Bhutan's claim in the dispute, which started in June, and said that its troops crossed the border at Sikkim to stop the China from constructing a new road near the plateau that would give it access to India's north-eastern states.

One aspect of the standoff was the different approaches adopted by the two sides: China's foreign ministry and official media released strong statements and opinions nearly daily while India's official statements were far fewer in number.

The army chief said that even if Beijing and New Delhi arrive at a resolution regarding the current standoff, "our troops on the border should not feel it can not happen again".

India does not claim Doklam for itself but is closely allied with Bhutan, which it regards as a buffer against rival China to the north. "We look forward to continuing engagement with the Chinese side on this basis".

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has reiterated that India's road map is peace and talks are going on to resolve the issue diplomatically.

The simultaneous withdrawal means that status quo has been restored in the area, sources said. "Disinformation and deceit are among the tools China is employing in its psywar to tame India without military combat, in Sun Tzu style".

Beijing has not responded to the Indian government statement yet.

It seems there could soon be an end in sight to the Doklam standoff as indications to this effect was given by the external affairs ministry (MEA) on Monday. The Ministry said, during the diplomatic exchanges, India was able to express its views, concerns and interests. Crucially, Reuters India has quoted Chinese foreign ministry as saying that the troop withdrawal has been "unilateral" from India's side.

July 31 - Chinese border guards enter one kilometre into Indian territory and threaten shepherds grazing cattle in the Barahoti area of Uttarakhand's Chamoli district. If there is a serious confrontation between China and India, the major members of BRICS, it doesn't look good for either country.

The move comes days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to China to attend a BRICS summit from September 3 to September 5. A spokesperson said China would "continue to safeguard its sovereignty based on the historical border".

Asked if the disengagement was from both sides, Hua repeated the same statement.
