Guam residents concerned, but have faith in USA military

The most recent statement was issued in a direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump's warning to Pyongyang on Tuesday that further North Korean threats would be met with "fire and fury".

Japan has in the past vowed to shoot down North Korean missiles or rockets that threaten to hit its territory.

North Korea's rapidly advancing nuclear missile technology and its threat to strike US territories have heightened tension that has transformed into rhetoric and a war of words between the U.S.

Pyongyang on Thursday warned Washington that it could fire intermediate-range ballistic missiles near the waters 30 to 40 km off the coast of the USA island of Guam in the Pacific.

In an editorial, The Guam Daily Post said the spotlight on the island offered an opportunity to show the world why an island of 162,000 people draws more than 1.5 million visitors a year.

Kim reiterated that the aim of the military operation was to "interdict the enemy forces on major military bases on Guam and to signal a crucial warning to the U.S".

"While it is extremely unlikely that Pyongyang would risk the assured annihilation of its revered leadership with a pre-emptive attack on US citizens, some residents of Guam are concerned". North Korea experienced several failures before a successful flight test in June a year ago, after which the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, declared that his nation had the "sure capability to attack in an overall and practical way the Americans in the Pacific operation theater".

On Friday, President Donald Trump urged North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un not to take any action against the USA, its territories including Guam or its allies, warning he would regret such a move - and "regret it fast".

Trump's unexpected remarks prompted North Korea to say on Thursday it was finalizing plans to fire four intermediate-range missiles over Japan to land 30-40 km (18-25 miles) from Guam, adding detail to a plan first announced on Wednesday.

The Nikkei slumped to its lowest close for nearly three months yesterday, leading an Asia-wide sell-off sparked by President Donald Trump's apocalyptic warning over North Korea's weapons programme. "There are many people that I have come in contact with that didn't even know Guam existed", he said. It quickly became a key part of global communication (the American trans-Pacific telegraph cable passed through Guam) and transportation (it was a fueling stop for trans-Pacific flights).

The UN Security Council this weekend slapped its toughest sanctions yet on North Korea over its latest test of a ballistic missile that could be used to deliver a nuclear weapon.

"If Kim Jong Un said he was going to hit Seattle or Anchorage, and the president says so, 'Go ahead, and see what happens, ' I think people there would be pretty upset", said Robert Underwood, president of the University of Guam and a former congressional delegate during the 1990s and early 2000s. Less than two weeks earlier, the North Korean government tested an intercontinental ballistic missile that experts said could reach as far as NY.

The US military has said it plans to increase its presence on the island and will move thousands of Marines now stationed in Japan to the territory between 2024 and 2028.

Pyongyang's media outlet said America was making "desperate efforts" to test weapons in the Korean peninsula.

The tiny American territory of Guam feels a strong sense of patriotism and confidence in the American military, which has an enormous presence on the Pacific island.

The way to avert a war with North Korea is to have a conversation, and that's not happening, Hecker said.

"The circumstances are unfortunate but this is a good opportunity for us to educate the world about Guam and our culture, about where we are, and who we are", Josh Tyquiengco of the Guam Visitors Bureau told Agence France-Presse. It's also the closest USA territory to North Korea, about 2,220 miles southeast of it.
