Fears of clashes in Kenya as President wins election

Chebukati said 15,073,662 Kenyans went to the ballot representing 71.91% of total registered voters.

The balance of votes were picked up by a number of other candidates.

The victor is also required to get 25 percent of the votes of at least half of all 47 counties to avoid a runoff.

Kenyatta, 55, got 54.7 percent of votes cast on August 8, securing the majority required to win, Independent Electoral & Boundaries Commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati said in a televised briefing Friday in the capital, Nairobi.

Kenyatta, Odinga and other party leaders had been waiting for the final presidential and parliamentary polls at the national tallying centre in Nairobi since noon.

"Having fulfilled the requirements of the law, I wish to declare Hon". First, Chebukati read out the presidential results by county, before declaring Uhuru Kenyatta the overall victor, accompanied by huge applause inside the packed hall.

During his five years as president, Kenya's economy has enjoyed steady growth and rising foreign investment.

"The Kenyan people have never disappointed. every time an election has been stolen, the Kenyan people have stood up to make sure changes are made to make Kenya a better place".

Odinga, a former prime minister, claims that hackers infiltrated the election commission's computer system with the identity of a murdered election official and altered results to favor the 55-year-old Kenyatta, the son of Kenya's first president after independence from British colonial rule.

Kenyans are awaiting results following opposition allegations of vote-rigging. Chebukati said the voting authority intends to uphold that requirement.

The IEBC, which spent about United States $500 million on the new biometric voting system, has dismissed Odinga's claims but admitted there had been unsuccessful attempts to hack the system.

It is the third successive election that Odinga, 72, has lost and disputed.

Many Kenyans fear a repeat of the violence that followed the 2007 contested election, when about 1,200 people were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced as protests over the result led to ethnic killings. Those charges were later dropped for lack of evidence, and Kenyatta ran for president in 2013, making his defiance of the ICC one of his campaign's centerpieces.

However, Uhuru came second with 31% with Kibaki clinching the presidency with an overwhelming majority especially after Raila Odinga's endorsement and the famous anecdote 'Kiabki tosha'.

Moments before the announcement, Nasa co-principal Musalia Mudavadi had declared that the coalition will not be party to Mr Chebukati's declaration. "There was peace but people started blowing vuvuzelas as soon as the results were announced and police moved in". "On behalf of my family and the family of my deputy President William Ruto, I am thankful for the confidence you have shown to me and my administration", he said. "We shall work together, we shall partner together, we shall grow together so we can build this great nation", Kenyatta said.

He urged the opposition to join him in building the country and extended a hand of friendship.
