DPL to host solar eclipse events, viewing party

A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is happening later this month when a total solar eclipse cuts a path across North America after a 99-year hiatus.

For those that are traveling to OR and into the path of totality-that is, where the moon will completely block the sun-a partial eclipse will start around 9:06 a.m., peaking at around 10:15 a.m., when the earth will darken for around two minutes. The 2:00 show is a special Starry Night Express featuring a live feed from Casper, Wyoming, with Museum staff in the path of totality.

The actual total eclipse will only be seen in a thin band running across the country from OR to SC.

Path of the eclipse through South Carolina, NASA. Numerous Nebraska cities have scheduled celebratory events during the days and hours leading up to the eclipse. "You also should not look at the sun through a camera, a telescope, binoculars or other device while also using your eclipse glasses or hand-held solar viewer". "We actually are getting requests from people down in California, Idaho, Washington, people flying in to go see the eclipse here", Ron Peters, who manages the fuel facility at Salem Airport, in OR, told KHOU News.

From Palm Beach County, it's closer to 520 miles, or almost 8 hours. It cuts a path across the entire state of SC, an easy day trip if the traffic cooperates.

Eclipse experts said even though Florida won't go completely dark, the eclipse will still be an event to remember. However, if the Earth is at the point in its orbit most distant from the sun and the moon is at the point in its orbit where it is closest to Earth, an observer at the right location will see the sun covered for longer, up to several minutes. As seen from here in Northeast Wisconsin, the moon will begin to pass in front of the sun at 11:53 a.m. Safe eclipse glasses should be extremely dark, the AAS said: Viewers should not be able to see anything through them besides the sun itself, and the sun shouldn't be too bright.

"Eighty percent is a lot".

The partial phases are, to be sure, rather cool to observe, including seeing the way the eclipse affects the lighting and makes crescents appear in things like trees' shadows. The sun's intense light can quickly cause permanent damage to a person's eyesight, even when it's mostly blocked by the moon.

In Florida, clouds are going to be a concern. Some exotic filters will provide awesome views of the sun, but can get costly. Instead, head to a park or the beach. "That will be the subject of many safety talks", she said. "You don't see that every day".
