Arsene Wenger: 'Olivier Giroud chose to stay at Arsenal despite exit offer'

Any out of practice fans, looking for a quiet Friday night to ease themselves into the new season, were very much out of luck today, as Leicester City and Arsenal kicked the Premier league off with a frantic display, ending in a 4-3 win for the Gunners.

New signing, Alexandre Lacazette in the second minute, opened the scoring with a header for Arsenal in the thrilling match at the Emirates.

The Gunners pulled level with a goal in first-half stoppage time by Danny Welbeck, who had hardly been a factor to that point.

Giroud outmuscled Harry Maguire to meet Granit Xhaka's corner with a strong header that hit the bar and bounced behind the line before Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel could club it away.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Wenger said of Giroud: "I love the man and the player". I rate him as a player but we have similar types with [Alex] Iwobi and [Jack] Wilshere back.

Guardiola had said last season that he wanted more English players at City but he has only added defender Kyle Walker from Tottenham and said the domestic transfer market is even crazier than Europe and the rest of the world. "I think soon [they will be back] but not for this game", he said.

Arsenal's Olivier Giroud celebrates after the Premier League match between Arsenal and Leicester City, in London, Britain, on August 11, 2017.

If you have never seen a Premier League game and made a decision to start watching this season, take note that this isn't a normal situation.

Albion expect a record crowd for their Premier League debut of around 30,400, just above the 30,338 figure for Bristol City's visit in April.

The joy did not last long, however.

As the 2017/18 Premier League season begins, there are already a lot of anticipations and expectations of who will be the Champions at the end of the season...but there is also a lot of predicting who will lead the race as Top goal scorer.

And the mood ebbed and flowed inside the Emirates - with some of the familiar grumblings of discontent evident.

Wenger looked on anxiously from the dugout, eventually appearing on the touchline when he introduced Ramsey and Giroud after 67 minutes.

However, this will still take 1,896,392 minutes - or more than 21,000 full games of playing time.

That is exactly what they did.

Down 12-0 in the second half, Vatuvei pounced on a grubbered ball in the in-goal to stun a flat-footed Tigers defence as they hoped to watch the ball roll dead.

Looking to strengthen their defence, the Foxes have signed Hull City defender Harry Maguire and Sevilla defensive midfielder Vincente Iborra and Arsenal will definitely be tired of their towering presence.
