Trump's rendezvous with Macron overshadowed by son's e-mail

President Donald Trump always seems to be doing the wrong thing.

Trump then squeezed Melania's bicep and told her to "have a good time" before leaving her with the French first lady and departing with President Macron.

According to a video on the French government's Facebook page, Trump admired country's first lady for being in "such good shape". I respect the decision of Donald Trump but I remain attached to the Paris agreement, "Macron said".

The Parisian glitz was not lost on Trump, who has used the French city as a cautionary tale, notably by citing a friend he calls Jim, who believes that "Paris isn't Paris any longer" because of the blight of Islamic extremism. "I love handsome rooms and this is one of them", he said by way of opening a speech at the Royal Castle.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump was speaking after his talks with Emmanuel Macron, while patting his counterpart's shoulder.

"We have disagreements; Mr. Trump had election pledges that he took to his supporters and I had pledges - should this hinder progress on all issues?"

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: You know what?

But the president stood by Donald Jr during a visit to Paris, in his first public remarks about the scandal.

Trump recalled the deep historic bonds between the United States and France, whose troops helped fight for American independence more than two centuries ago.

After watching Bastille Day celebrations in Paris tomorrow, Mr. Trump heads back to the United States, and more repercussions from his son's Russian Federation meeting.

While the French president and first lady didn't appear to make too much of it, social media took on the job of expressing their anger calling Trump sexist.

Macron said French and United States authorities would "work together in the common weeks and months to have a robust action plan" on combating terrorism and in particular terrorist propaganda on the internet.

But Mr Trump's problems followed him across the Atlantic as he was asked to explain why his son met with a Russian lawyer under the assumption she had damaging information on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign.

And the withdrawal of the USA from worldwide diplomacy under Trump could also present France with opportunities on the world stage, which Macron has made it clear he intends to seize.

In the evening, the Trumps and the Macrons dined at the Le Jules Verne restaurant, which is located on the second floor of the Eiffel Tower.
