Obamacare: US senators vote in favour of debating repeal

Mr. Trump and GOP leaders secured a political victory on Tuesday by convincing all but two Senate Republicans to vote to begin debate, with Vice President Mike Pence breaking the stalemate. According to reports, 50 Republican senators voted yes and the other two, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, chose to vote against the procedural motion.

Senator John McCain of Arizona, despite his recent diagnosis of brain cancer, returned to Washington exclusively for Tuesday's session so that he could vote on the motion to begin debate on the healthcare matter.

House conservatives may grouse, but if they're convinced the Senate's plan is the best they'll ever get, they could come around and vote to send skinny repeal without any changes to Trump's desk for his signature. On Wednesday, a vote is scheduled for the Senate's repeal-only bill, which should shed some light on who wouldn't be swayed by that option.

The "skinny repeal" bill would repeal both the individual and employer mandates, which requires individuals to have health insurance, and employers to provide health insurance to employees.

The 43-57 vote on the wide-ranging amendment fell far short of the 60 votes Majority Leader Mitch McConnell needed to approve his plan to repeal and replace "Obamacare".

Jacobs says it's still unlikely Senate Republicans can find the votes needed to completely repeal Obamacare or come up with a comprehensive replacement.

Senators voted Wednesday afternoon against another effort to dismantle the 2010 health care law signed by former President Barack Obama.

The Republicans still have not decided what to replace the healthcare Bill with, The New York Times reported.

At the urging of the President, the Senate Republicans went ahead with the vote to repeal Obamacare anyway.

If Republican senators elect to repeal key provisions of the law without immediately replacing it, the CBO estimates about 32 million consumers would lose insurance over the next 10 years. The House and Senate bills would need to be reconciled by a "conference committee" into one final piece of legislation that both chambers would have to pass again.

"We're determined to do everything we can to succeed", Mr. McConnell said.

More moderate GOP senators have said they fear repealing without an immediate replacement because it could generate even more uncertainty in the American insurance market.
