Charlie Gard Has Passed Away

They said a hospice would be a better plan, and they said life-support treatment should end shortly after Charlie arrived at a hospice.

It was decided earlier this week that Charlie's parents should let him go, when it became clear that the experimental treatment they wanted for their son was not possible. However, on May 25, three Court of Appeal judges upheld the High Court ruling.

As his condition deteriorated, Charlie's doctors came to the view that his brain damage was irreversible and that further treatment would be ineffective. Last week, Michio Hirano, M.D. of the Department of Neurology at Columbia University spent 2 days examining Charlie Gard with doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The position held by both the court and GOSH did no go down well with Yates and Chris.

Two Republican congressmen, Trent Franks of Arizona and Brad Wenstrup of OH, went so far as to introduce a bill in the House of Representatives earlier this month that would have granted permanent residence in the United States to Charlie and his parents.

The pope first expressed his support for Charlie and his parents in June. And Vice President Pence‏ said on Twitter that he was "saddened to hear of the passing of Charlie Gard". "The Holy Father asks that we join in prayer that they may find God's consolation and love".

Charlie's battle was discussed around the world, and even President Trump and the Pope weighed in, offering to help. A family member announced: "It's with great sadness that we have to inform you that Charlie passed away earlier this afternoon".

The judge ordered the name of the hospice and the exact timing of Charlie's last moments not be disclosed to the public. By the time Charlie was hospitalized in mid-October, he had already begun to undergo brain damage.

Once it was established that there was no medical chance for improvement, the parents accepted legal advice to withdraw legal proceedings.

When Gard and Yates finally conceded defeat, a second legal battle then ensued as to whether Charlie could die at home or had to remain in the hospital.

"I'm shocked that after all we've been through they won't allow us this extra time", said the statement from Yates.

Rest in peace, Charlie.

Speaking outside the High Court, Mr Gard described his son as a "warrior" and said he did not believe he would make his first birthday in two weeks time. The courts, however, after hearing much medical evidence, ruled that it would not be in the baby's best interest to have him transported to the United States to undergo experimental treatment advocated by Michio Hirano, a United States professor of neurosurgery. We always have and we always will, and we are so sorry we couldn't save you. "Sweet dreams baby. Sleep tight our attractive little boy".
