Putin: New sanctions will 'complicate' Russia-US ties

The US Senate voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to approve sanctions against Russian Federation for its alleged interference in the 2016 election.

According to Politico, a senior administration official stated that the "White House is concerned that the legislation would tie its hands on U.S. -Russia relations".

Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, the second member who voted against the sanctions amendment, said that sanctions against Iran or Russian Federation are like "tweaking their nose" and not effective.

If signed into law, the document would prohibit the USA president from being able to lift sanctions without Congressional approval. It also creates a congressional review process if the executive branch eases current sanctions.

The amendment reportedly has not thrilled the White House, which wants to retain its unilateral authority to impose and lift sanctions.

The sanctions follow the scandalous departure of Michael Flynn as Trump's national security advisor.

From the Senate, the bill still has to be approved by the House and then by President Trump to become law. House aides said they expected the lower chamber in Congress to begin debating the measure in the coming weeks, although they could not predict when it might face a final vote. The sanctions, for example, could apply to any financial institution or any foreign company that provides key parts or components to Iran's missile program.

During the hearing Wednesday, Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson urged senators to oppose the measure so that Trump and his administration would have "the flexibility to turn the heat up" if necessary. They shouldn't. We know that sanctions can have an effect: USA and European Union sanctions, combined with plummeting oil prices, pushed Russian Federation into a recession in 2015. They blocked USA companies such as Exxon Mobil, where Tillerson was chairman, from investing in such projects.

The new bill would slap sanctions on companies in other countries looking to invest in those projects in the absence of USA companies, a practice known as backfilling. The sanctions targeted Russian energy products as well as "mining, metals, shipping and railways and". "I would be very, very surprised if the president vetoes this bill". Putin seems content to sit back and watch as America tears itself apart with partisan witch hunts and hatred of the president.

The US Senate in Congress has voted almost unanimously to impose new sanctions against Iran and Russian Federation, setting up a possible confrontation with the administration of President Donald Trump as it attempts to improve relations with Moscow, PressTV reported. This too easily passed, with a 98-2 result. Only Senators Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders voted against the legislation.

It remained unknown whether Trump, who had been seeking rapprochement with Russian Federation for months, would sign the bill into law.
