Pakistan PM Sharif to attend historical SCO Summit in Astana

Days ahead of the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in which India and Pakistan will become full members, Assistant Foreign Minister Li Huilai China highlighted that combating worldwide terrorism was a shared global responsibility.

In an interview, she said Pakistan will be given full membership of SCO in the summit.

It is expected that the Turkmen president will hold a number of bilateral meetings within the framework of his participation in the SCO meeting.

Sushma said New Delhi's policy towards Pakistan has been "clear and consistent" and there has been no "flip-flop" in dealing with Islamabad.

The two countries will go through procedures in line with SCO rules to become members during the 17th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Li Huilai said at a news conference.

"China welcomes and supports Iran's wish to become a formal member of the SCO", he told reporters, ahead of the summit in Kazakh capital Astana which President Xi Jinping will attend.

"We hope Pakistan and India will strictly follow the charter of SCO and the idea of good neighborliness, uphold the Shanghai spirit to improve their relations and inject new impetus to the development of SCO", Spokesperson for Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hua Chunying said during her regular press briefing here.

"The next candidate, according to Russian Federation, following India and Pakistan, should be Iran, as well as other states that meet our criteria for the SCO membership", he said.

The population of China and India, the world's most populous countries, will help to make it an worldwide grouping covering largest population. Its members are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The SCO, seen by some as a counterweight to the US- and European-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), is a political and security organisation that facilitates counter-terrorism cooperation. Afghanistan has an obesever status.

"I would like to remind that process was launched in 2015 in Ufa, Russia".

The SCO is mainly aimed at military cooperation between the members and involves intelligence - sharing, counter-terrorism operations in Central Asia.
